Homeownership is a big part of The American Dream. At Knoxville Habitat for Humanity, we are a proud partner with individuals and families who are living in substandard housing conditions who want a safe and comfortable place to call home.
Knoxville Habitat for Humanity builds only in Knoxville and Knox County. Many of the counties surrounding Knoxville in East Tennessee have their own Habitat for Humanity affiliates who serve their geographic area.
The driving force behind where we choose to build homes is availability of affordable land, both in terms of the price we pay for the land as well as how much the taxes will cost our homeowners once improvements have been made to the property.
We have a two-pronged approach to our building strategy: primarily in-fill property within the city limits and subdivision tracts out in the county. We currently have two subdivisions, October Woods and Easton Meadows, that we have completed in Northeast Knox County, and we will begin construction of another subdivision in April 2011 with the city limits on Skyline Drive.
When families in our program have completed 250 sweat equity hours, they are eligible to select a building lot from among the properties we already own and where we plan to build. We work very hard to accommodate the needs of our families when it comes to where we build.
