Whirlpool Homeowner Looks Forward to Making Memories in her new Home

A kitchen table – that’s what Tina Thomas, 36, is most looking forward to having in the new home she is building in partnership with Whirlpool Corporation, a longtime Habitat for Humanity sponsor, as part of the company’s 100th anniversary celebration.

“I can’t wait to get me a kitchen table. That will be my first purchase for my new home,” said Tina.  “We’ve been eating in the living room on TV trays because my apartment is too small and I had to sell my other dinette set.”

Now her family, which includes her daughters Tierra, 18, and Matia, 15, will be able to share meals and memories around the table when their new three-bedroom home at 3623 Lyle Ave. is completed in December. Matia is very excited to have her own room in which she can paint a chalkboard on the wall. Tierra is enrolled in the pre-physical therapy program at East Tennessee State University.

The home will be more spacious and $300 cheaper per month than the 2-bedroom apartment near a busy railroad track she has been sharing with her daughters.

“The biggest reason I wanted a home is so that my kids will always have a place to call home,” said Tina. “I’m very proud as a single mom to have my own house. It’s been my goal for 8 years and will give me great peace of mind.”

Tina learned of the Habitat for Humanity program when she moved to Knoxville 5 years ago, but didn’t apply until three years later. In December 2009 she was approved and her journey to homeownership began in earnest.

In lieu of a cash down payment for her Habitat for Humanity home, Tina and her daughters contributed more than 500 hours of sweat equity. Tina earned most of her hours through Fi$cal Therapy, a weekly budgeting class, as well as other courses designed to teach her homeowner skills and about being a good neighbor. Her daughters contributed hours through good grades on their report cards.

“I’m so grateful and overwhelmed and thankful (for Whirlpool) to have provided the support to build this house with me,” said Tina. Then she added with a big smile, “I’m super stoked!”
