Homeownership is a big part of The American Dream. At Knoxville Habitat for Humanity, we are a proud partner with individuals and families who are living in substandard housing conditions who want a safe and comfortable place to call home.
Budget Tutors
A requirement of our program is that all of our prospective homeowners take a budgeting class called “Fi$cal Therapy” that is taught by volunteer budget tutors. Budget tutors teach a very basic, holistic budget balancing class that each of our prospective homeowners is required to attend. Being a budget tutor is a minimum one-year volunteer opportunity.
Family Selection Committee
This committee processess applications, documents income, explains the unique partnership with Habitat for Humanity to applicants, does home visits and makes recommendations of applicants to the Board of Directors.
Homeowner Construction Class Leaders
Volunteers who lead this class need basic construction skills (measuring, hammering and use of power tools), along with the patience and ability to teach these skills to mostly novice potential homeowners. This is a three-week course with a curriculum that is already developed and provided to you.
HUG (Habitat Urban Gardens)
This is a great educational program for our homeowners that teaches them how to develop the landscaping for their new home that will beautify it and protect the environmental quality surrounding it. Volunteers teach the class and also assist with the installation of new landscaping upon the homeowners’ successful completion of the course.
